Including Family Mementos in Your Decor

Did you notice this beach-going couple in the previous post? Those happy, gorgeous people are my grandparents. Right now, my grandmother is saying to my grandfather, "Oh, that Amy! I can't believe she put a picture of me in my swimsuit on the internet!" No worries, G'ma! You and your stud muffin were hotties then and are still hotties now!

I completely adore my grandparents. I don't get to see them very often, but I think of them every day. Thinking of them makes me smile, reminds me to appreciate each day, and lets me know that I am loved.

This lovely lady in the photo above was talked about in the last post featuring my Pottery Barn-Inspired Workspace project. This is my other grandmother, who passed away when I was about 12. She was a special lady, and I still love her as much as I did back then. She and my grandfather (sorry, no photo at this time!) used to travel around on a Harley! Sassy!!

Both sets of grandparents are inexplicably special to me. I treasure the black and white photos that have captured special moments in their lives. Making them part of my style and decor is so important!

Do you include special mementos
of your family in your decor?

Voting polls for Week 2 are open through Friday, March 12.
Voting open to everyone....bloggers and non-bloggers alike.

  1. Yes I do. I have a picture of my parents on their wedding day and also in storage I have portraits of my mom when she was 3 and my dad when he was 5 and I cherish them. I am going to have them reframed and hang them in my upstairs hallway. I love the photo of your grandparents in their swimming suits, that is a real treasure.

  2. Yes! I think mementos are what makes a home special. The shells, pictures, and little trinkets I have around my house remind me of so many wonderful memories.

  3. I love surrounding myself with mementos of my loved ones. Both of my grandmothers were very special to me and I spent a lot of time with them growing up. I miss them terribly, but keep them close to me by having things that remind me of them nearby--a collection of milk glass, pink depression glass, books, jewelry, aprons, silver, quilts, and of course photos.
I really like the photo of your grandparents in their bathing suits! Reminds me of a photo I have of my grandmother lounging in hers...I must dig that up!

  4. I have a gorgeous picture of my grandparents when they were dating. They are on the beach and look so happy. My grandmother wasn't a terribly happy go lucky person so I cherish that photo because I don't ever remember seeing her with a big smile like that. You've inspired me to pull it out and display it in my home.

  5. I love to surround myself with things that remind me of my family and special things and places. I have a hard time with photos - but I do have my favorite ones. I love to have out some of the things that my children have made or gotten for me.
    Love this post!

  6. I think you did a masterful job incorporating your grandparents picture with surroundings that have a beach/ sunbathing theme. This is a perfect way to pay homage to your ancestors.

  8. I love old black & white photos. I have been in the process of duplicating some of my parents stash of old pics to hang in my home. I have some of my dad & his siblings from the 30's. How cool the clothes were back then!
My sis & I redecorated a guest bedroom at my parents & hung some great old photos of my parents and their respective families in black collage frames. It adds such a special touch to the decor.
btw..is that an old swimsuit in the frame over the desk? If so, was it a relatives?

  13. Thank you for this! Like many families, we've lost too many loved ones too soon. Sometimes the images are just painful for me to look at. I need to bring some of the happier times out of the boxes. After I finish my studio project, it's on to pictures. Thanks for the nudge. I adore the one in the swimsuit. What fun!

  15. Grandparents' pictures certainly add a special touch, don't they. I have a wedding photo of mine on the buffet (it was theirs!) in my dining room. If you search my blog for grandparents you will see them. And now I have my grandma's and my mom's wedding dresses!! This reminds me that I need to post about them.

    Lovin' your SYTYCD entries!

  16. yes, I have a lovely framed photo of my mom and dad on their wedding day - since both of my parents are now deceased, this little reminder on my nightstand is precious. I also have a great photo of me and my sister - we are both in front of the Eiffel Tower- framed in an old european style frame- always brings back great memories.
love your style - I think your entry in this latest round of SYTYCD is by far the best!

  19. Yes, love photographs! My dad always had a dark room and took lots of photos. I have some going up the stairs where I see them daily and have some china and linens that were my Nana's and I remember loving those things as a child.
