Miss Mustard Seed's Creative Blog

When I try to describe my style and boil it down to a category, I end up with a string of adjectives. European meets American farmhouse meets country meets funky meets traditional meets family friendly. It gets ridiculous. My style is just what I like and how I like to put it together. Here are some things that are hallmarks,…

Painted Furniture
It’s what I do for a living and my painted pieces definitely find their way into my house. I don’t believe everything should be painted, though. I like mixing painted pieces with solid wood to keep a space from looking too “matchy.”

Antiques
I have loved antiques for over ten years. I enjoy the hunt, the stories they tell and the warmth they bring to a space. I tend to go for the more utilitarian pieces like scales, fans, Ironstone, Bakelite flatware, metal baskets and sturdy chairs.

Blue & White
Although my style has changed a lot over the years, my favorite color scheme (blue and white) has not. It looks cool in the summer and cozy in the winter. It’s clean, classic and welcoming. I do like to throw other colors into the mix on occasion…apple green, raspberry red, charcoal and chocolate brown. It’s a great way to stick with my primary color scheme, but add some variety.

Great Fabrics
Textiles have always caught my eye. I used to frequent the remnant bin at my local fabric store once a week to “save” any great fabrics that were cut too small for most projects. I especially love vintage textiles. I’m always on the lookout for grain sacks, linen tea towels and white coverlets.

Slipcovers
This is a very utilitarian and cost effective decorating decision for me. I’ve always had either pets or kids and sometimes both. I need furniture that can be thrown into the washing machine. Since sofas usually don’t fit, I really want a removable slipcover. It gives me the freedom to have people over and not worry about a spill or stain on the furniture. I also love how easily they can be changed out for a whole new look.

Reflection on Marian's Style:

Amy at WhisperWood Cottage

Oh, my goodness! Could you ask for anything more? Marian's blog is one that I drool over. I simply cannot wait to see what she posts next. I love her flea market items and her photos. How I wish I lived closer to Luckett's just so I could purchase a bit of Marian's style! Here is how I mix elements of Marian's style into the decor at WhisperWood Cottage...

Painted Furniture
Like Marian, I like the mix of painted furniture and wood pieces. Unfortunately, I do not have Marian's talent for painting furniture myself, so I tend to have more wood pieces than painted pieces. Many of my painted pieces are actually vintage metal medical cabinets with their original finishes!

Antiques
Like Marian, I have an affinity for antiques. In my own style, I tend to be drawn toward more industrial pieces like advertising signs and industrial stools.

Blue & White
Blue and white is a fairly new color scheme for me as my love for white walls and nautical touches has increased the past few years. Marian has definitely been an inspiration for me in how to correctly use blue and white in a room.

Great Fabrics
Now, I wish I had Marian's talent with fabrics. While I leave the sewing to someone else, I do have an eye for white bed linens, white sheer window coverings, and industrial canvas baskets.

Slipcovers
Marian is a genius with upholstery and slipcovers. Again, this fabric talent I do not have! One thing that I like to do is change out the pillow covers with the seasons. I noticed Marian and I have the same Ralph Lauren pillows from TJMaxx in our living rooms. It's amazing how these same pillows can fit into such different spaces!

It's YOUR turn!
